What Settings > System > Storage actually shows

Open Settings > System > Storage on Windows 11 or Windows 10 and you get a breakdown by category: Apps, Temporary files, Documents, Pictures, Other people, System and reserved, and a catch-all usually labeled Other. Each category shows a total and, for some, a shortcut into a cleanup action.

This view is built for a quick glance, not an investigation. It answers "is it mostly apps or mostly temp files" in a few seconds, which is often enough to decide whether to uninstall a game or clear a cache.

Why category totals hide the folder that actually grew

The Other category is where the real problem usually lives, and it's the least informative one Windows shows you. It's a bucket for anything that didn't fit the predefined categories — old project exports, downloaded ISOs, a backup tool's staging folder, or a misbehaving application writing logs nobody's watching. Windows tells you the bucket is 80 GB; it does not tell you which of the thousands of files inside it are responsible.

Even the categories that sound specific can mislead. "Apps" totals every installed program together, without showing you that one particular app's cache subfolder is the actual outlier. What Storage Sense automates

Storage Sense is the automation layer sitting behind the Storage settings page. Turned on, it periodically clears items Windows considers safe to remove automatically: temporary files, items in the Recycle Bin past a set number of days, and local copies of cloud-synced files that haven't been opened recently (turning them into online-only placeholders instead of deleting the cloud copy).

It's a maintenance habit, not an investigation tool. It won't tell you why a folder is large, and it won't touch anything outside its narrow set of rules — a 50 GB video export sitting in your Documents folder is completely invisible to Storage Sense, no matter how long it's been ignored.

What a folder-tree scan adds on top

A tree analyzer scans the file system directly and reports size at the level of the individual folder, sorted largest first, all the way down to individual files if you need to go that deep. Instead of a single "Other: 80 GB" line, you get the actual path — say, C:\Users\you\Downloads\old-project-exports — and can decide on the spot whether it's safe to remove.

It also reaches places Storage's category view doesn't cover well: external drives, and folders on a mapped network share, neither of which show up in the built-in Storage breakdown at all since that page is scoped to drives Windows treats as local system storage.

Using both together

The two aren't competing tools — they cover different stages of the same job. Check Settings > Storage first, as a five-second read on whether the problem is mostly apps, mostly system files, or an unexplained Other category. If Other is the largest slice, that's your cue to bring in a folder-tree scan and drill down to the actual path.

Why does the Windows Storage page show a different total than what I calculate manually?

Storage categorization uses its own logic for counting shared system files and reserved space, so its totals won't line up exactly with a raw folder-by-folder sum from a separate scan.
